We Bought a Piece of Paradise

The Block - June 2020

It looked like this the day we signed

What seems like an absolute lifetime ago now (630) days we signed and put down a deposit to buy this 973m2 piece of awesome. We have never built a home before and never owned a home before, so started all of this with zero experience.

As a consequence the last nearly 2 years have been mostly consumed with planning, saving and dreaming very big dreams about what would happen on this slightly slopey patch of grass. Since I have a site, I thought I should really start to document some of this.

Who knows, you may actually find it useful.

It’s quite difficult to visualise your end point from here, but it was still amazing and knowing that most of the view would be retained was bliss.

No touching… stand behind the fence

What would you choose a block for?

Imagine the Possibilities

To get here we lost out on what our first choice was due to the government releasing a new homebuilder grant and then a massive surge of demand that meant between starting to look around and when we signed, the block and estate we originally wanted to buy in was totally sold out.

Size of the Block

Our block is 973m2

One of our priorities was that the block be larger than 750m2, in the current climate getting space and an affordable block was very difficult. Building in the burbs would mean an empty block in our price range would be more like 450m2.

North-ish Orientation

Our block is more or less North East orientated

The front of our house faces South West and the rear faces North East, which is great for solar placement and energy efficiency.

The Reserve

We are one block away from a reserve

This may not have been on our list of must haves but when we realised that we would be one neighbour away from a reserve this has become a feature of our block we love.
The 2 larger trees towards the East are protected.

Not too Far

Away from the bustle but not too far away from services

We knew that in order to get the size of block we wanted we would be moving into a rural area, but there are some conveniences we did not want to have to give up or lose. We are 45minutes from the CBD.
